Research scope and evidence

Hemp residues to durable biochar

From inputs
to evidence.

Inputs

Hemp stalk residues from seed-production farms, subject to feedstock eligibility, competing-use and cultivation assessments. Procurement is based on accepted dry biomass.

Outputs

Biochar samples, measured processing and stable-carbon yields, energy-demand data, carbon-stability evidence and a life-cycle assessment of net CO2 removal. A separate exploratory study considers hemp seed oil for SAF.

YIELDS AND ASSUMPTIONS

The supply estimate assumes 3–5 dry tonnes of stalk residues per hectare. Biochar output and net removal are research results to be measured, not guaranteed quantities. Planting is proposed for spring 2027, with harvest from October and initial reporting targeted for December.

Residue eligibility and additionality must be established before procurement. Net removal requires process-emissions deductions, stability assessment and appropriate end use. Carbon-credit issuance is separate from research funding.
